Drum independence exercises

Independence improves when one limb maintains a stable reference while the others change in a controlled way.

Build a constant foundation

Keep eighth notes on the hi-hat and place the snare on beats two and four. Once that layer feels automatic, change only the kick pattern.

Practice every combination slowly. Precision and relaxation matter more than completing many variations.

Use a simple progression

Start with one kick hit per bar and move it through every subdivision. Then combine two positions without changing the hands or tempo.

  • Count the subdivision aloud.
  • Repeat each pattern for four to eight bars.
  • Stop when the hi-hat reference disappears.
  • Raise the tempo by 2–5 BPM only when playing without tension.

Listen to the complete result

Coordination should not sound like four separate exercises. Record or program the pattern in the editor to hear whether every voice belongs to the same groove.

Then move the pattern to the metronome and practice transitions between variations.
